JUN-PIERRE ART WORKSHOPS

TRAVEL SKETCHING – CONTES and the FRENCH RIVIERA: JULY 9-16, 2023

OVERVIEW

What is it about the French Riviera that has attracted so many artists through the years?  Is it the shimmering light, the distinctive blue of the sea, the palette in the landscape and in the architecture?  Come and experience what painters like Sargent, Matisse, Picasso found so inspiring in the Cote d’Azur.  I invite you to join me for a small group experience, “Travel Sketching: Contes and the French Riviera”.

Over the course of a week, we’ll be immersed in the world of travel sketching and watercolor painting. We’ll look at the process of creating a travel sketchbook or a “carnet de voyage,” from selecting your materials to creating a shorthand with your drawings and text, to conveying a personal voice and handling through your travel sketches.

The workshop will be based in Contes, a peaceful, perched medieval village 20 km from Nice overlooking the Paillon river valley. It has a dynamic community that fosters culture and the arts, including the association in which I am a part of, les z’Arts des paillons, where I will be hosting the workshop.

With Contes as our homebase we will visit other magnificent areas of the French coast including Nice and it’s Promenade and ancient hill castle, the Roman ruins and olive groves of Cimiez, charming Villefranche sur Mer and the gardens of the Villa Ephrussi de Rothchild.

Our group will be limited to 6 students, for more direct attention. This workshop is perfect for all levels, from beginners looking to develop their foundational skills to experienced artists seeking to refine their craft. You'll also have the opportunity to connect with fellow artists, share ideas and techniques, and gain valuable feedback on your work.

My goal is to make it easy for you. Unpack at the charming hotel in the downtown of Contes and get a sense of the beautiful, peaceful village and its environs. In the art studio we’ll have easels, boards and stools ready so you only need to bring your favorite sketching supplies for the week. There are several restaurants, cafe's, a farmer’s market and a small supermarket all within a very short walking distance from the hotel.  When we go on excursions we will have direct transport to each of our locations in order to make the most of our time.

This will be a week to take in a range of  the most beautiful sites of the French Riviera and to create something that will stay with you always.

Tour includes:  7 nights lodging, transportation to excursions + airport and train pickups and drop-offs*, breakfast daily, 1 welcome meal and 1 farewell dinner, all sightseeing fees and art instruction.  *International airfare is not included.  $3350 per person double occupancy. Pick up and drop off at the Nice airport and the Nice Gare Thiers train station.
